Developed in Japan, the keirin is a tactical race that starts behind a motorised bike, called a derny, which gradually increases its pace to about 50km/h for men and 45km/h for women, until it pulls off with three laps to go to signal a sprint for the line. The keirin is action packed with fast and furious elbow to elbow racing to the line, with crashes a regular feature in the spectacular event.
