Masters #TrackNats Day 1 Recap

This year’s Masters Track Nationals began with a flying start as riders battled for Individual Pursuit and Team Sprint glory. Records have tumbled once again at the Anna Meares Velodrome with two new Australian Championship and All Comers records being set, and one Australian record.

In qualifying and donning the rainbow bands, Victorian Brad Norton (Shepparton Cycling Club) set a new fastest time by a Masters Men 2 rider in the Individual Pursuit at a National Championships, covering 3000m in a time of 3mins 16.615 seconds in qualifying. This time also set a new All Comers record.

Norton went on to win the gold medal, successfully defending his title.

Also showing off their rainbow bands was Ben Neppl (NSW), setting new records for a National Championships and All Comers while qualifying for the Masters Men 3 Individual Pursuit gold medal ride-off.

The record beating time of 3mins 21.636 seconds was 1.71 seconds faster than his own previous record for the event, and within 0.6 of a second of his own world best time. Neppl eventually took to the top step of the podium after claiming gold in the finals, also defending his crown.

The Brisbane Hip Clinic trio of Douglas Higginson, Nathan Graves and David Watling (QLD) set a new Australian Record for the All Ages Men’s Team Sprint, bettering the time they set at the recent Queensland State Track Championships (46.776secs), completing the ride in 46.521 seconds, also in qualifying. After going on to eventually win gold in the event, the team was pleased with their effort.

“We were aiming for 45 (seconds) but beating our State Championships time is still a good feeling,” said Graves. “We changed the order around a little bit since then as well, we asked Dave to go third wheel and he did really a good job.”

“Even with the changing of position, and a little slip up in the starting gate for myself in the final, we were still faster than our State Championships time in both qualifying and the final,” said Higginson.

The third and fourth successful title defence for the day came from Sherrie-Ann Prossalentis, taking out her fourth Masters Women 4 Individual Pursuit title in as many years. Prossalentis also defended her crown in the Masters Women 4 Team Sprint.

“This is only my fourth time competing at a National Championships so I feel very lucky to have won this event for the four times,” said Prossalentis. “I’ll now have some time off while I make the decision to travel to World Championships.”

“Until then though I’m planning on winning the Sprint title, and will also be targeting the Time Trial, Scratch Race and the Points Race.”
